RESUMO:

This present work has for disposition to study the assumed feature of the literary myth of Don Juan in six compositions of the poetry of Castro Alves. Ordered in chronological sequence and by a forgotten dominant of the appreciation of the literary critic, namely, the cult of the fantastic and the gothic, we proposed to analyse, among consecrated works of the Bahia poet, texts on which it has not yet attracted the attention of the studies castroalvinos and which maintains a clear dialogue with donjuanismo in the literature of the eight hundred Brazilian romantic. Between lyrical poems, dramatic plays, and the few and improbable narratives in tale and chronicle that make up the poetics of the writer, all attuned to the theme of Don Juan, we highlight for this work the analysis of the compositions “Nightmare” (1863), “Chronicale” (1864), “The Three Loves” (1866), “The Return of Spring” (1869), “Don Juan or the Saturn Offspring” (1869) and “ The Midnight Angels” (1870). Trying to compare the famous narrative of the Spanish seducer with our delimited corpus, we proceeded to presente the evolution of the myth from its inception in Spanish orality to the definitive establishment of the literary myth in Tirso de Molina, followed closely by the recreation of Molière and Mozart in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The textual comparison with models of donjuanismo practiced between the scholars of São Paulo and Recife is also contemplated here in our work that can not do without the historical research to periodicals and printed of century XIX in which the inspiration of Castro Alves manifests indirect or more explicit. Relativising the role of the intertexts in the assimilation of the myth of Don Juan in Castro Alves, we rediscuss the form of literary borrowings that are often tacitly presented in the readings that the  poet of the Bahia undertook from the literary myth, as opposed to the enlightened ones epigraphs of the poet, a peaceful point among the critics of the writer, but whose proportions of the literary request do not often reflect the gratest motivation and inspiration in his artistic recreations. Anchored in the results of our research of history documentation, as well as in the work of consulting and reviewing the work of the Bahia writer, we emphasize the fragmentary and diffuse nature of the Don Juan myth in the poet’s writings, but still managed to capture a sense of maturation of the old literary motif, begun in his pen by the sign of the ultra-Romantic byronism until the deeper understanding of the tragic Sevillian character in dramas and poems of his work produced in the last years of his life and inspired by Gautier and Alfred de Musset.
