Studies of variation and linguistic change consider language as the core of society and, as such, inseparable from a speaking community, whose social aspects are perceived and represented through language - considered heterogeneous for presenting different systems that coexist (cf. Weinreich, Labov, Herzog, 2006 [1968]). In this sense, to study a linguistic phenomenon it is necessary to consider the conditioning factors that allow this heterogeneity. Based on these precepts, this qualitative and quantitative research has as general objective to describe and analyze the dependent variable, the past perfect form of the Spanish, through the variants compounded past perfect tense (henceforth, CPP) and simple past perfect tense (hereafter SPP). For that, we selected sociolinguistic interviews of the Mexican cities of Monterrey and Ciudad de Mexico, which integrate the linguistic corpus PRESEEA – Proyecto para el estudio sociolinguístico del español de España y de América. In order to reach the purpose, both linguistic and extralinguistic conditioning factors are considered. As linguistic factors we have: a) the presence and / or absence of adverbs that indicate prior to the zero point of the enunciation; b) the presence and / or absence of adverbs that indicate simultaneity at the time of enunciation; the extralinguistic conditioners constitute: c) age; d) schooling; e) locality and f) sex. The results obtained in the analysis indicate a predominance of SPP, including the presence of ADVs that establishes the speaker's current link to the enunciative moment, revealing a variation of the form ADVs + CPP substituted by, or in co-occurrence to the form ADVs + SPP; thus, the temporality that should refer to the CPP is denied by the preference of the SPP demonstrating how the variation is in evidence in the examined interviews.
