MEMES IN THE IDENTITY CONSTRUCTION OF ENGLISH TEACHERS: VOICES ON FACEBOOK
Language. Teacher identity. Facebook. English teacher.
The online social networks represent a space for construction and expression of identities and also values in contemporary times. As part of this web culture, memes are easily associated as particles of social transmission determining behaviors which are replicated through imitation and interferring, above all, on the way we see and position ourselves in the world. The present study intends to discuss the identity constructions of English teachers, built upon their positions expressed in shared memes on Facebook fanpages. This is a qualitative and interpretative research which is situated within the area of Applied Linguistics, with its theoretical framework designed by the triad Facebook/identity /language. It is based on a social and historical model of language (CIRCLE OF BAKHTIN), and on the cultural studies (HALL, BAUMAN, WOODWARD). The corpus of this study consists of 14 memes shared by 5 English teachers on 4 Facebook fanpages: Profissão Professor, Professor Sofredor, Professora Sincera e Professora Indelicada. Discursive analysis of the memes reveals that the "other" is essential to the constitution of the identity of the English teacher - the identity is forged as well as it is formed upon an incessant dialogical process of social voices interconnected both online and off-line. And it is within this process that most identities lead to social discredit and to an outdated professional, based on values which come from the “already uttered” and to a long historical and cultural period. It is crucial to reflect upon such findings.
