RESUMO:

The chronicle is, in the broad sense, a textual and discursive manifestation which characteristics make it slip the attempts of a rigid theoretical framework in what concerns its nature. Literature believes in the metaphorical power of the chronicle and, therefore, claims its paternity, while Journalism argues that it is the natural cradle of it. The fact is that it is present in two distinct fields of knowledge in their "formality", but similar in their symbolic manifestation: language. From this point derives the reason that makes it slide between the literary domain and the journalistic domain. This ability to be in two apparently opposing spaces, reflecting its amphibious nature, makes it the object of divergence and promotes controversy, the simplest one being guided by the question: are we facing a literary or journalistic "genre"? These questions are of interest to those whose research involves the character and constitution of textual genres, and thus of language studies in general. In this paper, we seek to map the linguistic / discursive trajectory of the chronicle in the centennial newspaper O Mossoroense, and, in this way, try to understand if, in this trajectory, there are traits or marks that can reveal to us if there is an embryo that generates this question of belonging about the Chronic gender. This research, with a theoretical, bibliographic and documentary purpose, aims to: 1. Map the chronic word in the newspaper O Mossoroense, 2. Classify the term according to the historical period, 3. Analyze the historical context of each period, 4. Analyze the classification criteria, 5. Document the linguistic path covered by the chronicle from its first publication and along the others in this centennial newspaper. To develop this research we seek for the theoretical contributions about the chronic genre, both of Literary theory, Linguistics and Journalism.
