RESUMO:

The poetic work of Augusto dos Anjos is marked by a strong presence of contrasts and antagonisms. One of these contrasts is found between the images of the Mother and the Prostitute. The main oppositions between them are their reproductive nature (present in the Mother and absent in the Prostitute) and their sexual nature (absent in the Mother and present in the Prostitute). Considering the repudiation of  sexuality and of sexual reproduction in the poet's work (Viana, 1994), and taking into account that sex is represented in western androcentric ideology as an act of masculine domination (Bourdieu, 2002) and that human reproduction is usually seen as a relalation of power by men over women (Beauvoir, 2009), we annalise some of Augusto dos Anjos' sonnets and excerpts from long poems to try to understand how his subversive aesthetics carries a feasible denunciation of the Patriarchy's oppression over women. The empathy that the poems' persona shows for the oppressed allow us to look closely at the image of the Mother and the drama of seeing her own body alienated by patrilineality. The same empathy bring us close to the image of the Prostitute, making us feel the sexual exploitation of her body. The images of the Father and the Satyr are brought as two faces of masculinity that exercise masculine domination by means of reproductive control and sexual control, respectively.
