RESUMO:

In this research, we investigated the modal construction Ficar de + INFINITIVE in order to characterize it both functionally and formally by considering structural, cognitive-semantic, and pragmatic aspects implied in the use of the micro-constructions found. For that purpose, the research is based on the assumptions of the Functional Linguistics Centered in Use, such as it was characterized by Furtado da Cunha, Bispo e Silva (2013), conjugated to the assumptions of the Construction Grammar which is defended by researchers such as Goldberg (1995), Croft (2001), Traugott e Trousdale (2013) etc. In methodological terms, the research is of eminently qualitative character grounded in quantitative support and it has descriptiveexplanatory nature. The database is composed of occurrences taken from the Reclame Aqui website, whose context showed to be very propitious to the apparition of constructs of the construction in focus. As regards the results of the research, in the construction Ficar de + INFINITIVE, ficar loses its properties as a full verb, a predicator, and it starts to act as an auxiliary. Besides, it can also be used in different tenses and verbal persons, as in ficou de enviar, fica de retornar, for instance. As regards the semantic aspects, the construction shows little restriction concerning the types of verbs recruited to occupy the INFINITIVE slot, and its use relates to the modality notions in their deontic and/or epistemic aspects. Finally, regarding the cognitive and pragmatic motivations, we believe that the use of such construction relates to both subjectivity and inter-subjectivity matters in the sense that it expresses the speaker’s attitude in relation to what he/she says (if he/she is sure or not, for instance), and also to the effects that he/she intends to provoke in the interlocutor (to persuade, to compromise, to demand an action, to attribute to others a certain commitment).
