SUMMARY:

This research aims to analyze, within the scope of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio Grande do Norte (ALRN), how black people are politically represented during the legislatures that run from 2015 to 2023. To this end, it specifically intends to: investigate how representation is configured of the black population, identifying how the political participation of self-declared black state deputies has taken place and who has spoken on behalf of the black community; examine whether black political representation allows the inclusion, in the political agenda, of different themes that cut across the racial agenda and leads to greater responsiveness in relation to them, and whether there is the power of an anti-racist agenda within the ALRN; and analyze whether or not black political representation constitutes a mechanism for promoting racial equality in the state, based on the contributions that ALRN has established to combat racism. This is applied research, predominantly qualitative, documentary, exploratory and descriptive-interpretive, which is developed using content analysis of public data collected from ALRN and related bodies. By analyzing the political representation of black people in ALRN, the development of this research can stimulate a better understanding of how, even in contemporary times, the dynamics of racism imposed on social relations and institutionalized in and through Parliaments - which constitute an eminently political and representation of society – and has the potential to encourage the creation of public policies that are not racially exclusive, but rather aimed at reducing these inequalities in Rio Grande do Norte.
