SUMMARY:

Conflict has been the object of study within societies and organizations as an inevitable phenomenon of human relationships. Within organizations, from the interactionist view, conflict has not only dysfunctional effects, but also functional ones, being necessary to promote changes and innovation processes (MCINTYRE, 2007; RAHIM, 2011). In this sense, conflict arises from the interaction of different entities or individuals and can be understood as a complex phenomenon, despite its multiple origins, different impacts for organizations and different strategies for its treatment. In the search for functional effects, attention must be directed to the nature and treatment given to conflict situations, so that they lead to beneficial results for individual and organizational performance. The present study will seek to investigate the relationship between the types of conflicts (intragroup conflict) and the styles of interpersonal conflict management used by public servants at the Federal University of Cariri. The research will be descriptive and will adopt the quantitative method, using a questionnaire or survey, to be sent by e-mail to the servers. To identify the types of conflicts, the Intragroup Conflict Scale (ECIG) will be used, which investigates conflicts in the “task” and “relationship” dimensions, developed by Silva and Puente-Palácios (2010). To identify conflict management styles, the Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory (ROCI-II) will be used, which investigates five conflict management styles: Domination, Avoiding, Obliging, Compromising and Integration developed by Rahim (1983, 2011). As this is a complex object of study, the data collected will be subjected to a network analysis. Network analysis is a machine learning technique that allows verifying non-linear associations in dynamic and complex systems, in addition, it allows identifying the most influential variables in the system, enabling better planning for future interventions. A correlation matrix is generated to identify the weight of associations and the expected influence centrality measure will be used to identify the most influential nodes in the network. In the end, it is expected to contribute to the study of conflict in Brazilian public organizations and offer useful data for the formulation of actions or policies for conflict management in the institution participating in the research.
