SUMMARY:

The COVID-19 pandemic, triggered by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, represents an unprecedented crisis in global public health, with particularly severe impacts on the elderly population. Since its origins in Wuhan, China, in late 2019, the disease has radically reshaped everyday life and the functioning of society on a global scale, resulting in an alarming number of deaths and significant economic and social disruption. COVID-19 can manifest asymptomatically or symptomatically, with severity ranging from no symptoms to severe respiratory complications, especially among the elderly. Advanced age has been identified as a significant risk factor for severe manifestations and complications of the disease, in part due to the physiological components of aging, which affect the effectiveness of the immune system. Thus, the elderly population faces increased vulnerability to the worsening of infectious diseases, making it a particularly susceptible group to the devastating effects of COVID-19. Objective: To analyze the biological and non-biological factors associated with mortality rates in elderly people due to COVD-19. Methodology: Different theoretical-methodological approaches were applied, with articles being organized as follows: (a) Factors associated with mortality in the elderly due to COVID-19: systematic review and meta-analysis protocol; (b) Factors associated with mortality rates in elderly people due to COVID-19: a systematic review with global data; (c) Spatial analysis of socioeconomic factors associated with mortality rates of elderly people due to COVID-19 in Brazilian municipalities; (d) Sociodemographic factors associated with mortality rates of elderly people due to COVID-19 in Brazil: a spatial approach. Results: The partial results of this thesis highlight the significant influence of biological and clinical factors on the mortality of elderly people affected by COVID-19 around the world. Advanced age emerges as a crucial factor, with mortality rates increasing progressively with advancing age. Furthermore, the presence of comorbidities, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and high blood pressure, plays a major role in the fatal outcome of the disease. Impaired functional status is also an important predictor of mortality, highlighting the importance of geriatric assessment in identifying prognostic factors. Clinical manifestations and laboratory changes, such as dyspnea, fever, cough and elevation of inflammatory markers, are also strongly associated with the severity of the disease and increased mortality in this population. These findings highlight the need for a multidisciplinary and personalized clinical approach for the effective management of COVID-19 in elderly patients, taking into account not only clinical conditions but also functional status and individual risk factors. Final considerations: It is intended to continue the development of the thesis with the production of two more articles, the conclusion of the third article and the production of the fourth article, which have as their object of study the factors associated with mortality rates of elderly people due to COVID-19 from the Brazilian perspective.
