SUMMARY:

Introduction: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder, represents a challenge for public health, given its diagnostic and intervention complexity, in addition to the lack of data on prevalence and treatment costs in the public health system in Brazil. Objective: To analyze the perception of parents of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) regarding care practices aimed at parents, conditions of access to diagnosis and adherence to treatment in SUS secondary care units in the city of Natal/RN. Methods: Two analyzes were conducted and one is ongoing: 1) a systematic review of qualitative studies published between January 2016 and December 2022, in English and Portuguese, with the aim of analyzing the perception of parents of people with ASD about the care and feelings experienced by them since their children's diagnosis. The articles were selected from the LILACS, SCIELO, BVS and SCOPUS databases; 2) a descriptive study, with a qualitative and quantitative approach, carried out through semi-structured interviews with six mothers of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder and who experience solo motherhood. The objective of this is to identify and analyze the difficulties faced by women who face atypical solo motherhood; 3) descriptive study, with a qualitative and quantitative approach, carried out through semi-structured interviews with twenty parents of people with ASD who are being monitored in secondary care units in Natal/RN with the aim of analyzing the perception of parents of individuals with ASD about the practices of care aimed at parents, conditions of access to diagnosis and adherence to treatment in SUS secondary care units in the city of Natal/RN. Results: 1) 333 publications were identified, of which 10 met the eligibility criteria. It was observed that parents face psychological suffering related to several factors, such as lack of information about what ASD is and how to have the right to treatment for their children, lack of support networks, disagreements or the absence of one of the parents in the care process, financial difficulties in paying for therapies in private services, lack of reception or care for the parents themselves, and long waiting lines or low frequency of sessions in multidisciplinary care in SUS devices; 2) When dealing with ASD, mothers face a constant challenge of reconciling caring for their child and caring for themselves. The full dedication to the well-being and development of their children, due to being in a single-parent family structure, often leads mothers to neglect their own needs and mental health. Emotional and physical overload can lead to significant burnout, highlighting the crucial importance of offering practical and emotional support to mothers in this context; 3) The data is in the collection and interpretation phase. Final considerations: The identification of Autism Spectrum Disorder has a significant impact on family dynamics, especially when associated with difficulties in obtaining the diagnosis and variables that can influence adherence to treatment. It is hoped that, through the presentation of the data contained in the third article, it will be possible to extract an analysis of the main difficulties faced by families in the context of these two elements, in the sphere of the secondary care network in Natal/RN.
