SUMMARY:

The biggest step forward for workers' health in Brazil was its constitutional recognition as a public health area. Understanding the impact of the working environment on Workers' Health, the SUS describes the promotion of a safe working environment as one of its objectives. In Brazil, according to the Social Security Statistical Yearbook published in 2019, around 582,000 accidents at work were recorded, resulting in more than 229,000 accident benefits. Of these workers, 104,000 required medical attention, 12,000 were left with permanent disabilities after the accident and 2,184 died. The aim of this study is to evaluate mortality and the behavior of accidents at work in Brazil, according to epidemiological conditions, Brazilian classification of occupation and part of the body affected, based on the Brazilian regions, in the 2011-2021 time series. This is an ecological time-series study using information from secondary sources. The purpose of this information system is to provide data to the National Institute of Social Security on workers registered through the Communication of Accidents at Work. Once the data had been collected, they were stored in Microsoft Excel®. During this stage, the databases were processed, selecting the relevant information for the research in question. After this stage, JoinPoint® software was used. The results showed that the mortality rate from accidents at work in Brazil between 2011 and 2021 shows the presence of a Joinpoint® in Brazil in 2016, the same occurs in the Northeast and South, North and Southeast regions in 2014 and in the Midwest in 2013, being the earliest. In 2011, the rate of worker deaths was 0.58 deaths per 100,000 workers in Brazil, with an upward curve until 2016, after which the curve began to fall until 2021, dropping by almost 44%. The South region had the highest death rate per 100,000 in 2011, at approximately 0.74. With a similar curve, the North and Southeast regions had an upward curve until 2014, and then the curve changed its status to downward until 2021, with the North having approximately 0.34 and the Southeast 0.37 deaths per 100,000 workers. This shows how Brazil is part of a scenario seen around the world, in which the occupation is linked to more than 2 million deaths, with 318,000 deaths due to accidents and 2 million due to work-related illnesses. Accidents at work account for 18% of deaths in low- and middle-income countries such as Brazil, compared to only 5% in high-income countries. It was concluded that the epidemiological behavior of mortality from accidents at work had an impact on the Central-West and South regions, where there was an increasing pattern until 2013, followed by a fall until the end of the period studied, and with regard to accidents, an upward behavior in accidents at work was identified throughout Brazil, but with a fall in the number of accidents until 2021. In this sense, with the creation of public policies such as the National Workers' Health Policy, the number of cases began to decline.
