SUMMARY:

The pandemic of COVID-19 brought with it many challenges regarding the discovery of conditioning factors for the worsening of the disease and its forms of treatment, as well as the search for rapid development of safe and effective immunizers to combat the virus, which involved the entire technical-scientific community, pharmaceutical groups, industries among others and with this the search for the reduction of mortality cases in Brazil. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the vaccination coverage of COVID-19 according to the recommendations of the National Immunization Program (PNI) according to priority group and age group and its association with morbidity and mortality indicators in the adolescent, adult, and elderly population in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. This is an ecological, cross-sectional, descriptive, quantitative study, with data on the number of people vaccinated in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, using data made available by the Ministry of Health, from January 2021 to March 2022. The results revealed that the state average vaccination coverage was 81.8%, with differences of variation of minimum 77% and maximum 91% among the municipalities. Another perceived analysis was among the health regions with the following regions standing out: Alto Oeste- VI and Seridó- IV, with 91% and 83%, respectively. Regarding the number of cases during the study period, the region with the highest rate was the Seridó- IV with 23.9%, followed by the Alto Oeste- VI health region with 19.1%. Meanwhile, in number of deaths, the Metropolitan Region - VII and Vale do Açu - VIII, had the most expressive numbers and were 1.8% and 1.6% respectively. Regarding the age bracket, the population between 12 and 17 years old, in the period from January to August 2021, maintained constant vaccination coverage, with a significant increase in the month of September, oscillating with a high between the months of October and December, after which it continued to fall. In the 18-64 age group, there were small, increasing oscillations, with the highest coverage peak in January 2022. The other age groups had similar behavior in the coverage, in which these age groups had the highest coverage between March and May 2021, followed by a drop in the other months and repeating the behavior between October and December. However, in the group of 80 years old or more, this increase started in January, peaking in March, followed by a drop until September 2021, when it went up again, peaking in October. Regarding the priority groups as to their vaccination coverage, there was greater adherence among people with comorbidities such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases corresponding to 30.77% of the public with comorbidities, followed by hypertension of difficult control or with complications/ target organ damage with 34.83%; In the Military personnel universe, which includes all the security forces, firefighters, and military personnel from the army, navy, and air force, the vaccination coverage was 45.51% for the Military Police, i.e., almost half of the vaccinated military public. Basic Education Professionals accounted for 88.24% of those vaccinated in this category. In the target public of health professionals, the category of Academics or students in training in health establishments stood out with 65.95%. Among the Transport Professionals, truck drivers accounted for 43.09% of this public. Thus, it can be concluded that the coverage was below the desired national average of 90%; however, an impact on the reduction of mortality in the same period studied can be perceived.
