SUMMARY:

Coping strategies in the face of the pandemic caused by the disease caused by the sars-cov-2 virus (COVID-19) carried out by health professionals are still poorly elucidated in the literature, despite the most diverse types of studies already carried out on the subject. Describing and interpreting them, in a qualitative perspective and not previously determined, is of fundamental importance and is necessary to understand what has happened and is happening. The scenario requires a survey, in the short, medium and long term, of prevention and protection strategies for professionals in the face of the imminent risk of illness, health impairment, loss of quality of life and work capacity, also considering the consequences for the services. health and for the population. This research has as its guiding question: what is it like to work as a health professional on the front line of care in the COVID-19 pandemic, what are the ways of coping that this work requires and what are the repercussions of this work on the health of professionals? The main researcher acted as a professional nurse on the front line within a COVID-19 sector, a situation that aroused the search for an understanding of the suffering caused by this disease. The main objective was to understand how frontline healthcare professionals work during the COVID-19 pandemic from the perspective of ways of coping and the impact on the health of the workers involved. This is a qualitative research that uses the Grounded Theory as a methodological framework in the structuralist approach of Strauss and Corbin. The Onofre Lopes University Hospital of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte was the research setting. A theoretical sampling of the population of professional nurses, physiotherapists, doctors and nursing technicians was carried out, divided into two initial sample groups: health professionals who worked on the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic and another with the managers of the COVID-19 sectors. 19 of the institution where the study was carried out. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews, which were carried out in person within the institution and online via Google Meet, according to the availability and preference of the participants, in total 24 interviews were carried out, with six managers, nine nurses, four doctors, one physiotherapist and four nursing technicians. Data analysis was performed through open, axial and selective coding, using the Atlas Ti 9.0 program. The results achieved were divided into five categories according to paradigmatic circumstances, conditions, action/interaction and consequences, respectively: working on assistance during the pandemic by a highly transmissible agent; facing the adversities of working in assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic; relating to people involved in the care of patients with COVID-19; dealing with the impact of work on their own health and, finally, achieving teachings and overcoming the adversities of working in the pandemic. The discussion is under development. As a perspective of conclusions, we have a review of the codes, diagrammatic detailing of the method and establishment of relationships between the categories, in search of a theorization that faithfully represents the phenomenon under study.
