SUMMARY:

The world has been facing the COVID-19 pandemic, which involves a new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), which triggers Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. The condition of homeless people deserves special consideration, as this population is naturally susceptible to infection and may be at greater risk of exposure thanks to the conditions in which they find themselves. Homelessness leads to great social vulnerability, with recognized difficulties in accessing the Brazilian health system and social support. Thus, the objective was to analyze the assistance provided to the homeless population with COVID-19 in the perception of users and health professionals. This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, carried out in Fortaleza/CE, between May and July 2021. Five professionals from the Consultório na Rua and 31 homeless people participated in the research, through a semi-structured interview. Data analysis was performed using the IRaMuTeQ 0.6 alpha 3 software, followed by thematic analysis. The research was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Universidade da Integração Internacional da Lusofonia Afro-Brasileira, with opinion No. 4,787,355 and CAAE No. 42997021.7.0000.5576. The professionals at the Consultório na Rua reported both difficulties and potential in the care provided to this population. The difficulties were related to: drug use, fear of the vaccine, increased demands and problems for the implementation of public policies. The potentialities referred to reception, immunization and health education. The way of life of the homeless population increased their vulnerability in the pandemic, however health care was enhanced by the availability of the office on the street, humanization of care and welcoming care. It is believed that the study brings relevant contributions and collaborates in the delimitation of resolutive proposals for public policies related to the specificities of care for homeless people in the context of COVID-19.
