SUMMARY:

The right to food begins with the guarantee of food for all citizens with daily access to food in sufficient quantity and quality. It is the right to food to have correct information about the content of food and preparations, healthy eating practices, and lifestyle, which promote health and reduce the risk of disease and ensure food safety. The indicators of eating habits can be related to Food Insecurity (FI) as they reflect worse consumption of quality food and insufficient quantity. Thus, the aimed assess the occurrence of food insecurity and overweight, and the relationship with purchasing habits and food consumption, among the population of adults and older adults in the Study Brazuca - Natal / RN. This is a cross-section, carried out with 411 adults and seniors. Household interviews were conducted using an electronic questionnaire (Epicollect5) to obtain demographic, socioeconomic, anthropometric (weight, height), and AI-related data. The prevalence and the confidence interval (95%) were calculated to measure the IF. The analysis of factors associated with IF was performed using Poisson Regression, with robust estimation of variance, to obtain the crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) and their respective confidence intervals (95%). Variables with p <0.20 were included in the model, and those with p <0.05 remained in the final model. In the BMI analysis, overweight (overweight or obesity) was observed in 76.3% (CI: 70.3–81.7%) of adults and 61.3% of the elderly (CI: 54.5 - 68,1%). We found that the prevalence of AI was 42.2% (CI: 37.6 - 47.3) of respondents. A total of 398 respondents reported that 80.2% (CI: 85.4 - 92.0) shop in super / hypermarkets and 3.8% (CI: 2.0 - 5.8) in open markets. The habit of consuming powdered juice or soda, 1 to 4 times a week, was mentioned by 53.3.8% (CI: 52.6 - 66.0%) of the individuals surveyed. In this same weekly interval, 82.5% (CI: 78.6 –85.9%) of respondents prefer cookies or sweet cookies with or without filling. Supermarkets/hypermarkets are frequented by 49.0% of people considered in food safety and 29.3% of people in FI. There was a significant association between being an adult and the occurrence of AI (PR = 1.38; 1.08 - 1.75). Those who do not consume lettuce or other vegetables are 29% more likely (RPBR = 1.29 CI: 1.10-1.51; RPAJ = 1.19; CI: 1.02-1.39) to be in FI, followed by 55% (RPBR = 1.19, CI: 1.02-1.39; RPAJ = 1.38, CI: 1.18-1.62 of those who do not consume fruit. We concluded that people with FI eat less frequently fruits and vegetables, which can compromise their health and guarantee SF in the studied population.
