SUMMARY:

The present thesis aims to evaluate neonatal hearing screening programs and the health care network for people with hearing impairment directed at children in the cities of Natal and Santa Cruz in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. This is a cross-sectional study, using secondary data. The target population is children born in the municipal public maternity hospitals of Natal and Santa Cruz / RN in the period 2015 to 2019. The first two articles only addressed the NHS program in the municipality of Santa Cruz. The article “Evaluation of the quality of a neonatal hearing screening program” presented the following results: the average of the universality indicator was 66.9%, the retest index varied between 1.5 and 10.4%, the follow- up of the retest varied from 38 to 65.4% with an average of 56.9%, the referral rate for auditory diagnosis varied from 0.1 to 1.5%, the percentage of neonates who underwent screening before 30 days was of 97.4%, the mother's municipality of residence significantly influenced the retest follow-up, while the screening result did not significantly influence and the functioning of the program showed positive changes over the years in all the factors analyzed. The second article "Access to hearing health service for children from the interior of the Brazilian Northeast" found that of the 104 children, only 54 (51.9%) attended the service, of those 41 went to the SUVAG Center. There were evasions in the auditory diagnosis process of 17 children, 21 had normal hearing and 3 had profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. The average age at the first hearing care service was 101 days and 211 days for the age at which the diagnosis was completed, both with a wide interval between the minimum and maximum age. The mother's age and the distance between the municipality and the service did not influence access to and use of the service. To conclude the research, an article entitled “Neonatal hearing screening programs in Rio Grande do Norte (2015-2019)” will be produced, to check the quality indicators of neonatal hearing screening programs in public maternity hospitals in the cities of Natal and Santa Cruz / RN, as well as identifying barriers and facilitators in accessing the health care network for people with hearing loss.
