SUMMARY:

Quality of life (QOL) studies have been increasingly gaining importance in clinical and epidemiologic research due to the aging of the population and the prolonging of the life of individuals with non-communicable diseases (NCD). The identification of conditions that may be related to the people QOL can help explain the heterogeneous distribution of results in health issues. Also, it provides decision-making support to those responsible for the management, and it can expand government actions to ensure better social, economic, and health conditions for the population. This study aimed to identify socioeconomic, demographic, lifestyle, health, and food security characteristics that may be associated with the quality of life of adults and older adults in the city of Natal, RN, Brazil. Transversal research based on the population using data of the BRAZUCA Natal study. A group of 295 individuals, both sexes, and over 20 years of age, residents in Natal-Brazil participated in the study.  An electronic questionnaire containing questions on socioeconomics, demographics, life quality, and health has used to interviews conducted with the participants at their residences. Anthropometric data (weight and height), food security (through the Brazilian food security scale – EBIA, in Portuguese), and the quality of life, utilizing the WHOQOL-Bref tool also collected. The descriptive analyzes performed were the absolute frequencies and percentages and respective 95% confidence intervals. Poisson multivariate regression (MPR) used to verify the association between the QOF domains (physical, psychological, social relations with environmental aspects) and the two general questions, “perception of the quality of life” and “satisfaction with health conditions ”With the independent variables. All analyses presented confidence intervals of 95%, and it was considered all the associations have statistical significance when p < 0.05. To verify the association between food insecurity and quality of life conducted the stratified analysis focused on the same analysis aforementioned using the data of individuals in food insecurity (n = 143). For the general population, being white (PR=1.50; CI95% 1.09-2.07), being overweight (PR=1.83; CI95% 1.17-2.86), being in light (PR= 2.73; CI95% 1.39-5.36), moderate (PR=3.34; CI95% 1.86-6.01), or severe (PR=4.24; CI95% 2.42-7.43) food insecurity were associated with the QOF perception as regular, bad or very bad. The regular, unsatisfactory, and very unsatisfactory evaluations of satisfaction with health were associated with residences where more than 6 people inhabit (PR=1.58; CI95% 1.15-2.18), declaring emotional problems (such as depression and anxiety) (PR=1.88; CI95% 1.49-2.37), sleeping less than 7 hours/day (PR=1.96; CI95% 1.49-2.58), having hypertension (PR=1.67; CI95% 1.37-2.03) and being in light food insecurity (PR=1.70; CI95% 1.23-2.35). In the stratified analysis of the part of the population in food insecurity, higher probabilities of low perception of QOL were associated with females, be an older person, where more than six people live at home with, drinking untreated water, having a sedentary lifestyle. , sleeping less than 7 hours/day, having diabetes, and being overweight (p <0.05). Declaring emotional issues was the variable most often associated with lower QOL, presenting higher probability for physical (PR=1.53; CI95% 1.10-2.14), psychological (PR=1.62; CI95% 1.13-2.34) and social relation (PR=1.91; CI95% 1.39-2.63) domains. Besides the conditions related to the social and physical inequalities, the QOF was shown to be affected by mental health conditions, both in the general population group and in the people in food insecurity. Government actions should review to contribute to the mental health of the population. Besides, it should combat inequities and promoting healthy lifestyles.
