SUMMARY:

The objective of this study is to evaluate the contributions of the direct purchase of food from family farmers to the Programa Nacional de Alimentação Escolar (PNAE) on Food and Nutrition Security (FNS) in Brazil. In general, the research is classified as evaluative, with secondary, ecological and longitudinal data, and whose area analysis units are the 5570 Brazilian municipalities. In order to meet the objectives, three surveys were conducted using different methods, which were presented in article format. The first article entitled "Purchase of food from family farming for school meals in Brazil: advances and challenges (2011/2016)" brings as its main results, the percentage increase of municipalities that comply with the legal purchase requirement that went from 34.3% in 2013 to 43.7% in 2016, with a greater number of suitable municipalities in the southern region of the country with 72.5%. Meanwhile, there was 26.1% in the Midwest, 27.4% in the North and 31.6% in the Northeast and this difference between the regions was significant (p = 0, 0001). On the other hand, the trend analysis of the Union's annual budget resources showed an average growth of 29.9% (CI = 12.8-49.7) with the prospect of a decrease as of 2016. In the second article, entitled "Contributions of family farming to school feeding and food and nutrition security: an integrative review", a total of thirty-three selected studies were presented, and it found that the main contributions of the purchase of food from family farming for school feeding on FNS were: access to diversified food, mostly fresh, minimally processed and organic; the formation of local food production and distribution markets bringing the consumer and the small producer closer; access to food with better nutritional and hygienic-health quality; and the promotion of healthy eating habits. In the third article "Reducing the statutory deficit and buying family farming products for school feeding in Brazil," the partial results show a difference between statistically significant stature deficit averages between municipalities that bought < 30% and ≥30% %. The multiple analysis found that the variables that had an effect on the stature deficit in children under five years were the purchase of food from family farming for the PNAE, IDHM, Gini Index, illiteracy rate and proportion of extremely poor children. In addition, the linear regression model presented showed that each increase in the percentage of food purchase from family farming to the PNAE will have, on average, a decrease of 0.553 % in stature deficit in children under five years, regardless of the other variables of the model. The partial results of the studies show that the purchase of food from family farming for the PNAE in Brazil has promoted the improvement of FNSin its different dimensions and reduced the stature deficit in children under five years of age.
