RESUMO:

Communication skills are an important tool for systems and patient-centred health services. An effective professional-patient relationship should consider the patient's needs, placing it as active subject in the decision-making process of their healthcare. The improvement of care can be stimulated through assessment and training in communication skills that enable behavioral changes in clinical practice. The present study aims to develop technologies to improve communication skills of primary health care professionals. It is structured in a multiphase methodological model that contemplates three phases: 1. Cross-cultural adaptation and validation; 2. Systematic Review; 3. Training Protocol. In the first phase, the process of cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (SE-12) was performed using standard methodology, by means of steps: conceptual and item equivalence, semantic equivalence (translations, retranslations, formal appraisal, discussion and synthesis, and pretest), operational and idiomatic equivalence, and measurement equivalence by Cronbach's Alpha (α) internal consistency analysis and exploratory factor analysis. A viable instrument was produced for the Brazilian context, which after some adjustments was considered valid, presenting high internal consistency (α = 0.946), and factor analysis indicating a single dominant factor in SE-12, with high correlation between items. Phase 2 is structured in the implementation of the Systematic Review to provide scientific information on effective communication skills training to improve the self-efficacy of health professionals. The review protocol defines the databases for which the data will be used. Clinical studies that investigate the effectiveness of communication skills training will be included, and information on time, content and assessment methods employed will be extracted. The quality of the evidence will be assessed by GRADE, and the data synthesized by the Cochrane manual. If possible, meta-analysis will be performed using standard statistics and RevMan software. Based on the results from the validation stage, and the analysis of the characteristics of the Brazilian health system, we intend to develop a training protocol, which composes the third phase of the study. The validation of an instrument to assess the self-efficacy of health professionals' communication is an accurate and useful measure in structuring the assessment of the professional-patient relationship. The results of the systematic review are expected to enable effective training strategies as well as the construction of a training protocol which will equip the improvement processes that focus on patient-centered care.
