RESUMO:
The current society is in constant process of population aging, thus triggering a significant increase in the number of elderly people.
In this sense, the present study analyzed the living and health conditions of the elderly in a municipality in the interior of the Brazilian Northeast.
This is a transversal study with a quantitative, descriptive and inferential approach. The target group was 177 elderly people from the city of Pau dos Ferros, registered in the Family Health Strategies (FHS) of the municipality and that were selected randomly and proportionally to the number of elderly registered in each ESF team in the municipality.
Of the 177 elderly people, there was a loss of 33 elderly (18.6%). The interviewer in charge was the resident of each elderly woman, drawn with the Informed Consent Form (TCLE) for the application of a questionnaire of the survey "Health, well-being and aging" (SABE).
Data collection was performed from January to September, 2018. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) was used to analyze the data, which was described based on absolute and percentage frequency values and the measures of the center of the distribution.
The inferential analysis was based on the Chi-square test for a significance level of 5%.
In the sample, female superiority was found (64.6%). It was observed that the age group between 70 and 79 years old presented a frequency of 40.3% of the elderly, while the youngest, aged 60-69 years, accounted for 37.5%.
They can not read and write 37.5% and 16.8% never went to school. Regarding socioeconomic issues, 93.7% have some income and almost all of them come from retirement or pension. Only 13% of this public currently works.
As for the morbidity profile, 63.8% are hypertensive, 24.6% are diabetic, 7.6% present chronic pulmonary disease, 15.3% are cardiac problems, 5.6% have had embolism / stroke; 38.9% were diagnosed with arthritis, arthrosis and / or rheumatism; 24.3% osteoporosis, 18.1% presented psychiatric problems and 16.7% of the surveyed elderly were diagnosed with depression.
Of those elderly people who need caregivers to perform some daily activity, 44% need at least one caregiver for the aid. In addition, 4.3% are bedridden and 1.4% are wheelchair users.
The results found in this study will enable the understanding / knowledge of the most diverse aspects that can influence the quality of life of the elderly in a reality quite different from those already studied at the population level.
