RESUMO:

INTRODUCTION AND JUSTIFICATION: In pre-surgical orthodontics hooks are fixated in orthodontics arcs to contribute with right stabilization of occlusion in the moment of rigid internal fixation.OBJECTIVES: this research was realized in vitro assay to evaluate the traction resistance of surgical hook prefabricated, threaded prefabricated, hook made of stainless steel wire and surgical hook made of brass wire comparing different ways of fixing them and different commercial brands. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 340 segments of orthodontic wire associated of surgical hook comprising a total of 34 groups. One of them was control group with 10 hooks made of brass wire fixated with silver weld and the others 33 experimental groups were composed of 10 surgical hooks in each group. In 25 groups, the hooks were prefabricated, fixed to the orthodontic wires by means of manual pressure made with appropriate pliers and association of different quantities of electric welding points. In one group the pressure was made with heavy-cut pliers and in another group the base of the hook was distempered and then the pressure was made with appropriate orthodontic pliers. The brands compared were Morelli, TP orthodontics, American Orthodontics and MAO MidAtlantic Ortho and the forms of fixation were manual pressure made with appropriate pliers and manual pressure associated with 2,3,4 and 5 point of electric solder. In 5 groups, the hooks were of stainless steel wire, one group being fixed with silver solder and the other attached with 1,2,3, and 4 electric soldering points respectively. The last group consisted of 10 threaded surgical hooks. The topography of the sample was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy before and will be evaluated after the traction test. Analysis of variance (ANOVA-2 factors) and Kruskal-Wallis will be used for multiple comparisons at a significance level of p equal to 0,05 to identify differences in traction strength between samples of each group. PARCIAL RESULTS: The average strengths of the tested groups were: 120,97 Newton’s (N) in the group of welded steel hooks with electric welding points; 9,27 N in the Morelli brand; 8,24N in TP orthodontics; 10,41N in TP brand orthodontics with tungsten coating; 16,53N in the American Orthodontics brand; 10,54N in the MidAtlantic Ortho brand and 36,51N in the threaded ones.
