RESUMO:

The occurrence of most mental health problems is determined by a set of factors and the influence of each varies from person to person and according to the living conditions of each. The population sickness due to Mental Disorder and the process of evolution of care in this field of health in Brazil is a challenge. In this sense, this study aims to evaluate the morbidity and mortality indicators in the Northeast Region of Brazil in relation to hospitalization for Mood Disorders (affective) and Other Mental and Behavioral Disorders and to compare the morbidity and mortality indicators related to these diseases in the period 2007 to 2016 with the findings of the Policies for the Prevention of Mental Illness in Brazil. This is an ecological, retrospective, exploratory study, developed with secondary data from the Northeast Region of Brazil, for which DATASUS data were used, through the Hospital Information System and Mortality Information System, in the decade between 2007 and 2016. The independent variables of hospitalization and Mortality Rate and as dependents of age, sex, schooling and marital status are considered. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences was used to analyze the data by means of the study of mean, median, standard deviation and student t test, considering a 95% confidence interval. When the hospitalizations for Mood Disorders (affective) and other Mental and Behavioral Disorders were evaluated, they showed a decrease in the average over the decade, however, Mood Disorders (affective) have higher values when compared to other Mental and Behavioral Disorders. Of these, up to three times smaller values were obtained. These data are statistically significant when submitted to the t student test. Regarding the Mean of Hospitalizations and Mortality Rate for both reasons, it was observed that when the cause related to Other Mental and Behavioral Disorders, as well as Mood Disorders (affective) presented a general tendency to reduction, however, with some points of increase, such as in the period between 2007 and 2008 for Other Mental and Behavioral Disorders and 2009 and 2010 for Mood Disorders (affective). The mortality rate from hospitalization has behaved the same in both of them during the decade. Regarding the Mortality Rate, a high rate was observed for the damages of other Mental and Behavioral Disorders. In addition, a larger number of elderly individuals, aged 80 years and over, followed by those aged 70 to 79 years were observed, and the tendency is to increase the number of deaths, according to the increase in the population's life years. With regard to gender, a higher percentage of women were observed when dealing with Mood Disorders (affective), the opposite observed in Other Mental and Behavioral Disorders, whose male population has the highest numbers. Regarding marital status, most deaths were concentrated among single people. When the chapter on mental disorders was evaluated, it was verified that in general 50% of the deaths were related to Mental and Behavioral Disorders Due to the Use of Alcohol. When spatially evaluated, similar areas are observed over the years.
