RESUMO:

Introduction: The larynx has an active participation in the execution of the wind instrument, related to constriction and glottic opening in airflow control. Therefore, instrumentalist musicians belong to a specific group of individuals who use the vocal tract intensely in the exercise of their professional activities, which can lead to vocal complaints such as hoarseness, throat clearing and voicings after the intense use of the instrument by these professionals . Objective: to verify the prevalence of vocal tract discomfort and the factors associated with the work of instrumental musicians in the city of Natal. Methodology: The sample consisted of 117 professional and trained musicians, who answered a questionnaire about socioeconomic, demographic and health conditions and habits, as well as filling the Vocal Tract Discomfort Scale (EDTV) and recording of the voice through the PRAAT software for acoustic and perceptual-auditory analysis of the voice using the Visual Analogue Scale (EAV). Results: the sample consisted mostly of men (95%), with mean age of 35.6 years, with high school (83%), statutory (73.5%), $ 3500.00, with a workload of 40 hours per week, distributed homogeneously among the four groups of Orchestras of the city of Natal and that dedicate themselves exclusively to work as a musician in these orchestras. Most of the musicians are dedicated to the practice of Clarinet, Saxophone, Trombone and Trumpet. According to the application of EDTV, the prevalence of Vocal Tract Discomfort (DTV) was 72.6% (95% CI 63.5-80.3). DTV was associated with the presence of muscle pain related to work activity (PR = 1.36, 95% CI, 1.11-1.67, p = 0.010). There was no association between DTV and the other factors analyzed. The 'dryness' symptom was the most reported among participants, followed by the 'sore throat' symptom. 'Dryness' was the symptom that obtained the highest score after the practice of the instrument, showing a significant difference between the values before and after, both related to the frequency (p = 0.018) and to the intensity (p = 0.021). Higher scores for burning, sore throat, itchy throat, sore throat, sore throat, and sore throat were reported in relation to gastroesophageal reflux (p <0.05). Partial conclusions: there is a high prevalence of vocal tract discomfort in soproinstrumentistas musicians in Natal, although this has not been associated with work-related factors.
