RESUMO:

It has been observed that mortality due to falls in the elderly may be masked by incorrect completion of the Death Certificate, when omission of information about the fall. This study aims to improve the quality of information about deaths from falls in individuals aged 60 years and over, in the State of Rio Grande do Norte (RN) between 2010 and 2015. This is a cross-sectional study based on the probabilistic relationship (linkage) of the death records for falls reported to the "Sistema de Informações sobre Mortalidade" (SIM) and hospitalizations with falls information in the "Sistema de Internações Hospitalares" (SIH). Between 2010 and 2015, a total of 70869 deaths were reported to the elderly, and 317 (0,45%) of them were caused by falls, mean of 52,8 deaths/year, with a specific mortality rate for falls of 15,4 deaths per 100,000 elderly people. Most of deaths due to falls were women (54%), age group 80 and over, in black/brown (57%), married (31%). Schooling and occupation contained a high index of incomplete data, making epidemiological assessment impossible. In the period, the SIH reported 8561 procedures for the hospitalization of the elderly with a primary or secondary diagnosis of falls. Of these, 449 died, a difference of 132 deaths more informed by SIH. The initial evaluation found deaths that are reported in the SIM with omission of the cause fall. It was observed the need to qualify the morbidity and mortality data by falling in the elderly in the RN, tracing the mortality trend of this disease, improving the quality of information from the Mortality System for the State and seeking to serve as a basis for several studies that help the favoring a culture of caring for the elderly.
