Aim: To know the antipsychotic Prevalence in the elderly in the nursing homes (NH) of Natal-RN. Methodology: Cross-sectional study carried out on December 10, 2013 in 10 ILPI of the city of Natal. A sample was form by 320 NH residents aged 60 years or over who consented to participate in the study. For the identification of factors associated with the prescription of antipsychotics, a bivariate analysis using the chi-square test and a Poisson regression in a variable dependent on the number of prescribed antipsychotics were used. The age, gender, type of NH (for-profit and non-profit), polypharmacy, cognitive impairment, Barthel's dispatch level and morbidities. Results: The prevalence of antipsychotic use among the elderly was 50% (n = 160). The institutions with profitable 65.5% (n = 76) used at least 1 antipsychotic, whereas in the non-profit NH the prevalence was 40.9% (n = 83). The multiple analysis showed an age above 80 years (PR = 1.61), having moderate severe impairment (PR = 2.01), polypharmacy (PR = 1.32), being in for-profit institutions (PR = 1 , 47), statistical association (p <0.05), greater use of antipsychotics in the elderly in the Natal ILPI. Conclusion: It was a high prevalence of antipsychotics in the ILPI in the city of Natal and had as consequences that may generate, suggest other measures that result in the reduction of medical prescription.
