As a socially constructed phenomenon, violence and old age in the media are viewed differently between societies and between groups in the same society. The media has an important role for common-sense knowledge, raising the dissemination of information to a plurality of audiences. The present study aimed to analyze the media discourse about the issue of violence against the elderly. This is a qualitative, documentary, descriptive study. For the research, textual material was collected from a search on the internet for printed, radio, electronic and television media, respectively: Journal Folha de São Paulo, CBN radio and G1 News Portal. We studied the news published between January 2013 and November 2017, due to the consolidation of the Statute of the Elderly. The terminology used to compose the content searches was "violence against the elderly". The news was collected and later news content was analyzed through IRAMUTEQ software. The results showed that there were different approaches regarding quantities, languages and contents in the researched medium. It was observed that the discourses converge to approach the theme of violence against the elderly in a more sensationalist context, lacking a socio-cultural analysis of this problem. In this way, the media play the role of informing, however, it does not proceed to the broad analyzes on violence to the elderly.
