SUMMARY:

Objective: To investigate the association of different volumes of objectively measured moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) with physical functional performance in older adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 242 older adults. MVPA was assessed by accelerometer for seven consecutive days. Based on the MVPA recommendations (³150 min/week), the participants were classified as: i) ‘very inactive’ (< 33%: <50 min/week, n=66); ii) ‘inactive’ (33-66%: 50–99 min/week, n=49); iii) ‘somewhat active’ (67-99%: 100–149 min/week, n=48), and; iv) ‘active’ (100%: 150–300 min/week, n=68). Physical performance was assessed by the Senior Fitness Test battery: six-minute walk test (6MWT), timed up and go (TUG), 30-s chair stand (30-s CST), 30-s arm curl (30-s ACT), chair sit-and-reach (CSR), and back scratch. A composite functional fitness score was calculated by the sum of the z scores of all tests. Generalized linear models were used to analyze the coefficient estimates (β) and its confidence intervals (CI) of 95% of the outcomes between groups, considering the 'very inactive' group as reference. Results: The ‘somewhat active’ and ‘active’ groups had better performance on the 6MWT (β= 24.9 m, 95% CI 1.1, 48.8; β= 42.9 m, 95% CI 20.7, 65.2; respectively), TUG (β= -0.6 s, 95% CI -1, -0.2; β= -0.4 s, 95% CI -0.8, -0.08; respectively), 30-s CST (β= 1.7 rep, 95% CI 0.7, 2.8; β= 1.1 rep, 95% CI 0.1, 2; respectively), 30-s ACT (β= 0.8 rep, 95% CI -0.3, 2; β= 1 rep, 95% CI -0, 2.1; respectively), chair sit-and-reach (β= 3.1 cm, 95% CI -0.6, 6.9; β= 4 cm, 95% CI 0.5, 7.6; respectively), back scratch (β= 1.3 cm, 95% CI -2.4, 5.1; β= 1.7 cm, 95% CI -1.4, 5.6; respectively), and in the total functional fitness score (β= 2.2, 95% CI 0.8, 3.6; β= 2.2, 95% CI 1, 3.5; respectively) in relation to the reference group. Conclusion: Although the current volume of MVPA (150 min/week) recommendations is positively associated with a broader physical functional performance in older adults, a lower volume (100 min/week) is also linked to functional fitness benefits.
