SUMMARY:

Invertebrates are at imminent risk of extinction due to anthropogenic pressures, lack of knowledge of their diversity and dislike by a large part of society. In the case of subterranean fauna, made up of unique terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, the lack of knowledge is even greater. Some freshwater invertebrates from the caves of Rio Grande do Norte, in northeastern Brazil, are unique in that they are oceanic relicts. Among these are the isopods of the Cirolanidae family, made up of endemic taxa from the Jandaíra Formation that have not yet been described. With at least two main lineages coexisting in the region that have not yet been described. This study aimed to describe through integrative taxonomy a new genus composed of four allopatric species of troglobitic cirolanids, and to provide information for the conservation of these crustaceans from the Caatinga. This integrative approach involved tools from molecular systematics, traditional taxonomy and morphometrics to delimit these species. We evaluated the physical and chemical characteristics of the biotope of the type locality. As an environmental education strategy, we used semi-structured questionnaires to assess the perception of elementary school pupils in the area surrounding karst regions about the underground environment and its diversity. The phylogenetic relationships show that the two lineages of the Jandaíra Formation are more closely related than any other genus of cirolanids. Lineage delimitation methods, interspecific genetic distance and the haplotype network separate the cirolanids into three monophyletic clades. In this study, only one of the groups was studied, consisting of the more elongated isopods with a wider anterior part, in the shape of a 'torpedo'. A detailed morphological description is given of Gen. nov. and its new species distributed in four caves and one resurgence zone, Três Lagos cave and its resurgence zone the Tetéu waterhole, Crotes cave, Pedra Lisa and Olho d'água do Cedro. In the type locality, Três Lagos cave, the abundance of the species had a significant correlation with oxy-reduction potential, depth, chemical oxygen demand and pH. Finally, regarding environmental perception, there were differences in perceptions between the students from Baraúna and Felipe Guerra regarding the caves, the living beings that inhabit them, which are the invertebrates and their perception of them. While the teachers only differed in relation to the living beings that inhabit the caves.
