SUMMARY:

Springtails are microarthropods widely distributed in all terrestrial ecosystems, primarily associated with the soil environments. Despite playing a fundamental role in ecosystem functioning, studies involving these animals are limited and mostly deal with taxonomy, especially those conducted in Brazil. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to compare the community of epiedaphic springtails in different phytophysiognomies of the Parque Nacional da Serra das Confusões (Piauí state, Brazil), namely Floresta Semidecidua (Canion), Savana Estépica (Lajeiro), and Carrasco, assessing the effects of seasonality, vegetation profiles, and other biotic and abiotic variables on the populations surveyed. To do so, collections were made using pitfall traps, measurement of biotic and abiotic variables, screening, mounting and identification. The representativeness of the inventory was estimated through a species rarefaction curve with interpolation and extrapolation levels. To analyze the alpha diversity, richness, diversity, and evenness were estimated using a variance analysis (ANOVA). For beta diversity analyses, Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance (PERMANOVA), Whittaker's diversity, Principal Component Analysis for species composition and the influence of environmental parameters, and a Redundancy Analysis were conducted to analyze the influence of environmental parameters. In this study we sampled 29,616 springtail specimens belonging to three orders, 12 families, 31 genera, and 46 morphospecies during the two collection periods. Abundance and richness analyses indicated significant differences between the different periods. Shannon-Wiener and Simpson's Diversity Index analyses indicated significant differences in the interaction between the two seasons, especially in the Steppic Savanna phytophysiognomy (Lajeiro). Pielou's Evenness Index indicated significant differences between the different periods and in the interaction between the periods and phytophysiognomies. The main environmental variables influencing diversity patterns were soil temperature, litter height, pH, soil moisture, sand, silt, canopy cover, and plant richness. The results presented compiled a broad inventory for the State of Piauí, with the highest abundances and wealth observed during the dry season.
