SUMMARY:

Neptunia Lour. is a small genus of Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae of pantropical distribution with about 12 species. It is characterized by including species with heteromorphic inflorescence and yellow petaloid staminodes, often associated with wetlands. Revisionary studies for Neptunia date back more than 50 years, demonstrating the need for updates in taxonomy and nomenclature, since the taxa have cryptic and polymorphic characters, which leads to inaccurate taxonomic delimitations, even generating identification errors in the herbariums and affecting other areas of research with the taxon. Therefore, the objective of this work was to carry out a taxonomic review, morphological characterization and adaptations of Neptunia, aiming at a better understanding of the generic limit and species circumscription. Between january 2018 and august 2020, individuals were collected following the usual methodology in plant systematics, as well as visits to the collections of the main national herbaria most representative of the genus and, for specimens from outside Brazil, digital images were analyzed high resolution available on online platforms or borrowed. Here we describe five species and present morphological comments, identification keys and data on the geographic distribution of American species. When reviewing all names related to Neptunia to clarify the nomenclatural history of the genus, we recognize two new synonyms, we assign lectotypes to two accepted names, N. plena and N. pubescens, and other lectotypes to five other names (Neptunia tenuis, Mimosa natans, Neptunia mazatlana, Neptunia microcarpa, Neptunia palmeri). The search for the identification of taxa showed that the delimitation of species is still fragile, which reinforces the greater need for further studies to assist in the systematics of species.
