SUMMARY:

Care work is understood as activities developed with the purpose of meeting basic needs related to life and home maintenance. In this way, all people are consumers of care work, but the responsibility for producing care activities has historically fallen to women. This social structure becomes even more complex in the face of the demographic transition process, which promotes a transformation in the age structure, with a reduction in the proportional participation of children and an increase in the participation of the elderly. Therefore, the objective of this study is to measure the effect of different demographic regimes in the production and consumption of unpaid care work for the total Brazilian population in 2015. To this end, the study will use estimates of production and consumption of unpaid care activities by sex and simple age, made by Jesus (in press) based on PNAD (2015). To capture the effect of age variation, the study must apply, in the context of 2015, the age structures of the Brazilian population of 1970, 2022 and the projected by IBGE for 2055, through the use of the direct standardization technique. Furthermore, in order to facilitate the interpretation of the results for a broad audience, intend to obtain monetary values for the time dedicated to unpaid care activities and relating this estimate to the PIB of 2015. This exercise will make it possible to highlight the magnitude and importance of this work carried out daily, mainly by women, but invisible in Brazilian society, in other words, will allow to identify how much these activities would add to the PIB, if they were valued.
