SUMMARY:

Social inequality is one of the major drivers of internal migration flows in Brazil. Until the end of the 1970s, these flows were associated with the rapid and concentrated development of the economy, primarily in the Southeast region, which exacerbated regional inequalities. However, starting in the 1980s, with economic deconcentration and economic crises, the migration patterns shifted toward a new configuration characterized by a slowdown in long-distance migration to agricultural frontiers, an increase in return migration, medium and short-distance migrations, a decrease in rural-urban migration, an intensification of urban-urban movements, and consequently a reduction in the significant flows to the Southeast, primarily originating from the Northeast and Minas Gerais (SALES, BAENINGER, 2000; CUNHA, BAENINGER, 2001; QUEIROZ, DOTA, 2019). The main objective of this work is to analyze the direct and indirect effects of return migration in the Northeast region, at the level of the Federative Units and their municipalities. Return migration is characterized by the flow of individuals who left their place of birth, lived in another region for some time, and then decided to return to their place of birth. This decision to return is influenced by various factors associated with the place of origin and the destination (BATISTA; CAMPOS; RIGOTTI, 2017). In addition to the main objective, the volumes of interregional and intraregional return migrations in the Northeast region will be compared, and the importance of return migration in the cumulative immigrant and emigrant volume for the decade will be analyzed. To achieve these objectives, data from the 2020 Demographic Census and the methodology developed by Ribeiro (1997) were used to identify the direct and indirect effects of return migration. Based on the results obtained in this work, it was observed that municipalities in the Northeast region exhibit different patterns of return migration effects among themselves, as these municipalities have their own sociodemographic characteristics that influence the impact of return migration.
