SUMMARY:

Suicide is a social phenomenon that is multi-determined by socioeconomic, biological, psychological, political, and cultural issues. Higher rates are reported by men, young adults, and seniors. At the conjuncture level, it correlates with economic crises, fiscal adjustment, health crises, divorce rates, unemployment rates and changes in the age structure of the population (cohort discontinuity and population aging). This dissertation aims to analyze the effect of age, period, and cohort on suicides in total and perpetrated by firearms in Brazil and Major Regions in the period from 1980 to 2019. And to evaluate the spatial distribution of suicide mortality rates in men in the municipalities of the Northeast region, in the period 2015 to 2019, in the agegroup from 10 to 80 years, and its correlation with socioeconomic and demographic indicators. Corrections were made for quality and underreporting of death records. In the last forty years, Brazil showed 10.22 deaths per 100,000 men, with the South and Midwest regions presenting higher coefficients than the national, and the lowest in the Southeast and Northeast. The same profile was verified in suicides whose means were hanging, exogenous intoxication and firearms. After estimating the age, period and cohort models, there was an increasing age-drift trend for total suicides for Brazil and all regions, except for the South region, where it was stationary. And downward trend for firearm suicides for all locations. The age, period and cohort effects for total suicides was different from that observed for firearm suicides. For total suicides, there was a positive gradient with advancing age, and in those committed by firearms, a peak incidence was identified between 35-44 years, with subsequent stabilization.Reduction in the risk of death (RR<1) was observed for suicides perpetrated by firearms relating to the reference period (1995-199) for all locations, except in the North region, where the effect was not significant. The younger generations from the 1960s onwards had a higher risk of death by total suicide and a lower risk for those perpetrated by firearms. These results can be correlated with the period effect promoted by the Disarmament Statute, which reduced the circulation of firearms in Brazil, as suicides by firearms are the main indicators of the presence of firearms in households. The helplessness experienced by elderly Brazilians due to social security insecurity, changes in family structure, economic and physical violence, neglect, and allowance that they experience, may be correlated with the effect of age and cohort observed in total suicides.
