SUMMARY:

Consumption has historically been an important mediator in the relationship between population and environment. This relationship, however, has almost always been understood under the Malthusian bias, with other demographic dimensions being neglected. Understanding consumption in its fullness requires the exploration of different areas of knowledge, notably from the social sciences, since it is necessary to consider aspects related to values, economics, behavior, ethics and society in general. One way to capture this wide range of factors is by making an age-period-cohort (APC) analysis. Thus, the main objective of the research is to identify and understand the effects of age, period and cohort on the evolution of the Ecological Footprint - EF of households in 9 metropolitan regions in Brazil (Belém, Fortaleza, Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro , São Paulo, Curitiba and Porto Alegre) based on the use of APC models in the data from the Family Budget Survey – POF, produced by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics – IBGE, in its 5 editions: 1987-1988, 1995-1996, 2002-2003, 2008-2009 and 2017-2018. As a measure of consumption, this study will use the concept of Ecological Footprint, which represents the size of the land area that is necessary to sustain a certain lifestyle and considers several forms of consumption of a population. The dimensions of household consumption contemplated in this work refer to expenses related to water, electricity, domestic fuels and vehicular fuels. As a result, it is expected to verify the evolution of regional and sociodemographic differentials in EF per capita of household in the latest edition of the POF. With the application of the APC model, it will be possible to identify cohorts that have higher levels of consumption; which age groups have the largest ecological footprints and to what degree certain periods have contributed to the increase or decrease in consumption by the population. Furthermore, a secondary result of the research that can be explored is to calculate the average EF per capita by family arrangement, thus verifying which type of family has the highest levels of consumption.
