SUMMARY:

This research approaches the internal and international migratory movements in Mozambique. Socio-economic factors, natural disasters and conflicts are what contribute to the increase in mobility in the country, which manifests itself in different ways in different regions (South, Center and North). The instability that the country experienced between the 80s and 90s, provided an environment for the increase of migratory movements in the rural-urban direction and for neighboring countries, especially South Africa and Zimbabwe, the latter combined with the search for job opportunities due to the historical connection between these countries since the end of the 19th century. The beginning of the 90's with the end of the war was characterized by a massive return of Mozambicans to their areas of origin after about 16 years. In the early 2000s, the country experienced an explosion in economic growth as a result of foreign investments, with emphasis on the extractive industry, associated with economic and political crises in neighboring countries, contributed significantly to the increase in international immigration and new internal migration trends. In this context, the objective of this work is to analyze the conditioning factors associated with internal and international migrations in recent years, as well as their impact on population dynamics and on the spatial redistribution of the population. Microdata from the IV Demographic Census 2017 will be used in order to make a descriptive analysis of the migration phenomenon, sociodemographic characteristics of migrants and their selectivities, and assess recent trends in migration. According to the literature, an individual's decision to migrate is influenced by several factors, hence a statistical modeling will be used to identify the determining factors that affect the probability of the decision to migrate. It is hoped that the results of this study can contribute to the design of public policies with a view to responding to new migratory trends.
