SUMMARY:

The main objective of this thesis is to examine the age differentials between heterosexual couples in Brazil and the sociodemographic characteristics associated with homogamy, hypergamy and age hypogamy. The age differences between couples is still a dimension little understood in the patterns of marital unions, compared to other attributes such as race/color and education. In most societies it has been observed that conjugal unions are more frequent between older men and younger women. It has been observed that the age differences between couples have varied over time, between different contexts and according to the sociodemographic characteristics of the spouses. But there is still little knowledge about the reasons for these variations. The predominance of couples with a large age difference in favor of men has been identified in the literature as an important indicator of gender inequality and less egalitarian marital relationships. The studies that analyze the patterns of marital selectivity by age have been concentrated mainly in economically developed countries, with little work analyzing other contexts. Therefore, this study has three specific objectives: I) analyze the age differentials between couples by regions of Brazil between 1991 and 2010; II) examine which sociodemographic characteristics of men and women influence the chance of being in a homogamous, hypergamic or hypogamic marital union between 1991 and 2010; III) investigate the relationship between age differentials between couples and the total number of children and reproductive preferences. For this, two data sources will be used, the 1991, 2000 and 2010 Demographic Censuses and the 2006 PNDS. The methodology that will be used to achieve the proposed objectives is descriptive data analysis and multinomial logistic regression to analyze the sociodemographic factors associated with chances of men and women of being in heterogamous and homogamous unions by age. Preliminary results with data from the 2010 Census, considering both spouses aged 20 to 35 years, showed 11.5% of hypogamic couples, 43.7% hypergamic and 44.8% homogamous.
