SUMMARY:

Violence is a material mechanism that has always been present in human society, manifesting itself predominantly in urban space. With regard to Brazil, since the 1980s, homicides have been the second leading cause of death in population groups in the 15 to 39 age group, especially among males. In order to explain this phenomenon so present in the daily lives of large urban centers, socioeconomic theories point to factors such as poverty, income inequality and the absence of the State, being crucial for its expansion. Geographic discussions on the theme, on the other hand, condition that the formation of territories delimited by / for power relations are fundamental in its consolidation. Demography, in turn, brings in its contribution the effects of the demographic transition: the effects of population aging and, consequently, the reduction of the relative young population, for the reduction of crime. However, few studies in the field of population study discuss the subject from the use of spatially disaggregated information, at the level of geographic coordinates, for analyzes in the intra-urban space. In view of the problem raised, considering the increase in violent deaths in the last decade, this project has the following question: how is the distribution of homicides in the intra-urban space of Natal, what is the pattern and characteristics of violence, taking into account the heterogeneity of the urban space in relation to the population's socio-demographic characteristics and the provision and infrastructure of services? In other words, and more specifically: what is the spatial pattern and characteristics of violence in the intra-urban space of Natal, taking into account the heterogeneity of the urban space in relation to the population's socio-demographic characteristics and the offer and infrastructure of services. Spatial analysis techniques will be used to make a diagnosis about the behavior of violence in the intra-urban space of the city of Natal, in recent years, with a focus on analyzing the relationship between the distribution of occurrences of violence and the population's sociodemographic characteristics - such as race , sex, age, education and income (among others) - and their connection in the infrastructure of urban spaces, such as the existence of public lighting, paved roads, basic sanitation, squares and schools (and other public facilities). It is hoped that such an approach will allow a better understanding of the phenomenon of violence in a metropolis like Natal, its distribution in intra-urban space, and the relationship of this distribution with sociodemographic and infrastructure characteristics of intra-urban space, contributing to the discussion of the theme of urban violence and violence. socio-spatial segregation.
