RESUMO:

Work-motivated pendular mobility is a is a type of displacement that is increasing in the world and in Brazil. So, it becomes important to understand the determinants of this recent spatial movement. International studies deal with commuting by different approaches, with emphasis on the profile of individuals who practice this type of mobility. On the other hand, research in Brazil has focused more on the flows themselves, especially in metropolitan areas, than on the characteristics of the individuals, who move for work reasons outwardly and within municipal territories. Therefore, the objective of this dissertation is to advance in the possible gaps left by several researches, regarding to the understanding of mobility characteristics and to recent pendular immobility, considering the demographic and socioeconomic attributes of those who do not move (immobility) and those who move for work reasons in Brazilian municipalities in the years 2000 and 2010. Hence, the differential and the contribution of this dissertation is to address to this flow under the individual aspects of the workers who practice this displacement. The categories of analysis will be 'pendular mobility', which refers to individuals who work in a different municipality in relation to their households, and 'pendular immobility', for those who work in the same municipality of which they live. That being said, this dissertation discusses the importance of the geographic dimension when referring to the most recent elements of pendular mobility, emphasizing factors that refer to a movement with 'new' characteristics, in addition to what is discussed in the literature: metropolitan areas, urban dispersion, economic deconcentration, among others. Pendular mobility will be approached through a 'micro' perception, so that the characteristics of this flow can be understood. The microdata of the Demographic Censuses of 2000 and 2010 are used as the main source of information. In order to achieve the proposed objectives, a descriptive analysis of the characteristics of workers who are involved in these movements is carried out, and the binary logistic regression model is applied to test the possibility of practicing or not the pendular movements for work reasons, which are explained by demographic determinants and socioeconomic variables.
