The Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) have a fundamental role in the Brazilian economy to generate employment and income for the economically active population in a sustainable way, as well as leverage the economy. The conception and extinction of these companies has a significant impact on the economy and, especially, on the formalization of the working-age population. This research proposes an analysis of the closed population (absence of migration) of the MSEs by cohort (generation) regarding the constitution (birth) and extinction (death) from 1980 to 2016 in the State of Rio Grande do Norte. Based on the data collected at the Commercial Board of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, mortality tables were calculated for several generations of companies constituted between January 1, 1980 and December 31, 2016 by size and field of activity. It was verified if differentials of level and standard of mortality / survival of the companies by size and branch of activity. It was observed that the increase in the participation of Individual Microentrepreneurs (MEIs) in the total number of incorporated companies, although it has the effect of reducing the number of informal businesses, may have some negative effect on the survival probability of MSEs, especially those already consolidated. It was observed that in the first year of the advent of the companies to the MEI a considerable reduction of the active population in the labor market, period marked by a reduction in the ratio of total dependence of the population.
