RESUMO:

The present study highlights maternal religious affiliation as an important factor associated with infant death, being the main objective of this study is to analyze the differences in childhood mortality by categories of maternal religious affiliation, controlling for factors associated to the Northeast Region in 2010. In Brazil, the rates of childhood mortality and infant showed declined tendency in recent decades (Szwarcwald & Castilho, 1995; Garcia & Santana, 2011; Teixeira et al, 2016). In addition, the country has undergone important transformations demographic, economic, social, environmental and cultural, among which, changes in the religious field are also observed (Alves, Cavenaghi & Barros, 2014): the reduction in the number of catholics, the number of protestants, mainly pentecostals and also people who declare that they have no religious affiliation (Coelho, 2009, Verona et al, 2011). To reach the objectives, this study proposes as a source of information the Demographic Census 2010 that provides details on religious affiliation (there are 52 general categories and 150 subcategories of religious denominations), as well as data on important factors associated with childhood mortality, in addition to information on deaths of children under five years of age. It is also intended to use Binary Logistic Regression Models to verify the relationship between maternal religious affiliation and the occurrence of death in childhood, being controlled by associated factors. Finally, the timeline is presented with the next steps of the research on data analysis, results and the conclusions.
