RESUMO:

The heterogeneity of fertility behavior in regions where social inequalities persist has attracted the interest of demographers, especially among Latin American researchers. They seek to understand the differences existing in a context of low fertility, questioning the late fertility pattern, as observed in developed countries, or a heterogeneity in the fertility schedule (age at first birth), due to differences in social conditions and economic development of women. However, recent studies have not yet reached a conclusion on how the fertility structure will be for regions with these characteristics. In this context, the Northeast region is characterized by social inequalities and the second largest region with a population contingent in the country, having a late drop in fertility levels compared to other Brazilian regions, despite having experienced a more intense decline in a short space of from 7.53 children per woman to 2.06, from 1970 to 2010. The hypothesis is that the behavior of fertility in the Northeast is heterogeneous (women without children, who postponed motherhood and with early / reduced fecundity), and this combination contributed to declining fertility in the region. The objective of this study is to analyze the fertility behavior of northeastern women in a multidimensional perspective, since it is understood that the differences due to the desire and the time of having or not having children are related to social, economic and cultural experiences. This study is relevant to know the profiles of women who are experiencing different fertility regimes, and can contribute with inputs to public policies aimed at reproductive health and reproductive rights. The methodology will firstly consist of a descriptive evaluation of the evolution of the proportion of births in the order of parity of women of reproductive age (15 to 49 years), according to a set of socioeconomic, demographic and reproductive variables, based on data from PNDS 1996 and 2006. Subsequently, profiles of women who had a child, two children, three or more children and who did not have children will be drawn, based on the same set of variables, using data from PNDS 2006. To create profiles, the chosen method was a Grade of Membership (GoM), a model based on the fuzzy partition logic, which allows the creation of homogeneous and mixed profiles, based on categorical variables.
