SUMMARY:

Environmental pollution represents ecosystem and human life effects. Among the numerous compounds that are considered pollutants, pharmaceuticals have gained prominence because they began to be detected in different environmental matrices. These compounds are widely used in human and veterinary medicine and reach the environment through different routes, and are considered a threat to biota and human health. Given this scenario, it is important to carry out tests that evaluate the effects of the pharmaceutical on different organisms, mainly cyanobacteria, due to their ecological relevance and their implications for public health. In addition, pharmaceutical pollution has a social context, so it is essential to understand how the population recognizes its role in this problem. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the effects of pharmaceutical products on cyanobacteria and their potential health risks, as well as to analyze the perception and dissemination of the development of this theme in Brazilian society. The data obtained showed that the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in the environment represents an ecological risk for cyanobacteria and that different therapeutic classes can affect the growth, photosynthesis, and activities of antioxidant enzymes of these microorganisms. In addition, it verified the need for experiments that contemplate the effects of mixtures and with conditions similar to the environment. Regarding the relationship between pharmaceutical pollution and society, there was a need for environmental awareness in the Brazilian population, since common waste is the method used to dispose of expired or out-of-use medicines by 62% of the participants. of the study carried out. It is also important to emphasize the need to disseminate the current Brazilian norms regarding the correct final disposal of medicines for human and veterinary use since in view of the results found, the ineffectiveness of the application of the laws is noted. Still, in this social scenario, it was found that scientific dissemination materials involving the theme of emerging contaminants are still scarce considering the wide range of compounds belonging to this group. Additionally, the transparency of the quality of information disseminated in scientific dissemination content is reinforced to avoid biases and also direct these materials to children and adolescents. The evidence found in this study indicates that the issue of pharmaceutical pollution must be addressed in an interdisciplinary way, from the ecological aspect involving ecotoxicological tests, through the perception and communication of risk to the elaboration of educational materials.
