SUMMARY:

This project carries out a critical analysis of the political-media discourse of Jair Messias Bolsonaro on his personal Twitter account during the second rounds of the Brazilian elections of 2018 and 2022. The study is based on the perspective of critical discourse analysis (CDA) and seeks to establish connections between the power of discourse and social control through fear, concepts discussed by Foucault (2006; 2010; 2014) and other theorists such as Umberto Eco, Hannah Arendt, Jason Stanley and Roger Griffin, who study fascism and its communicational manifestations. The investigation focuses on the offensive and anti-democratic expressions selected in Bolsonaro's posts, in order to understand how these discursive strategies contributed to the consolidation of the fascist ideological identity of the Bolsonaro movement. The study proposes to decode the role of the political-media discourse in the construction of the Bolsonaro narrative, by adopting the "God, Homeland and Family" discursive triangle in 2018 and the "God, Homeland, Family and Freedom" quadrant in 2022. These discursive approaches were fundamental to emotionally connect the candidate to voters and legitimise his political project in the digital environment, a privileged space for the propagation and amplification of polarising and anti-democratic discourses. Based on critical discourse analysis and theories that address fascism, the research seeks to reveal how Twitter was used to disseminate radical political messages and stimulate polarisation in the Brazilian elections. It is hoped that this research will contribute to broadening studies of media, political communication and critical discourse analysis by providing an intersection between media-political discourse and the power of discourse to understand the formation of Bolsonaro's ideological identity. Such critical reflections on the role of discursive strategies in contemporary politics may contribute to a debate on the challenges faced by Brazilian democracy in the face of the advance of extremist discourses and the insistent presence of fascist discourse in our political history.
