KEY WORDS:

Forage, wildland, production cost, chemical composition and production.

PAGES: 48
BIG AREA: Ciências Agrárias
AREA: Zootecnia
SUMMARY:

The objective of this research was to evaluate the performance, production characteristics, cost analysis and financial income of silage, using crops that are part of the seed distribution program for family farming, carried out by the Government of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. , and evaluate the possibility of using Millet for this purpose. For this, an experiment was carried out in a randomized block design where the treatments used were: Milho BRS Potiguar, Milho BRS Cruzeta, Sorgo BRS Ponta Negra and Milheto BRS 1501; each treatment had 5 (five) repetitions. The research was conducted under drip irrigation, all treatments received fertilization as suggested by the soil analysis. Options for using the entire plant for silage were characterized, measuring characteristics of green mass production, dry mass production, leaf mass production, bunch mass production, leaf:stalk ratio; green and ensiled chemical composition; quantification of losses in the ensiling process, the results were subjected to statistical analysis. In addition, the production costs of each tested variety were estimated, indicating the total income per hectare, net income and rate of return. Cruzeta corn presented the highest green mass production with 47.72 t ha-1. Sorghum produced a greater amount of dry matter per hectare, totaling 16.59 t ha-1. Millet was the crop that showed the greatest losses during the ensiling process, totaling 6.4%. The fresh millet forage presented higher levels of CP and CNF among the treatments, totaling 11.86% and 36.43%, respectively. Furthermore, sorghum silage resulted in the lowest CP content at 7%. Cruzeta corn has the highest financial yield, with a net income of R$5,634.09 per hectare, millet was the lowest cost treatment of R$10,557.20. Corn varieties can also be used as a forage option, as there is no difference in green mass production between corn and sorghum, in addition to silage having higher CP contents when compared to sorghum. Millet can be a lower investment option, but less productive. In irrigated conditions, corn production is more financially advantageous.
