RESUMO:

The main goal of this project is to evaluate the importance of local and regional processes in driving spatial patterns of phytoplankton species composition, distribution and diversity. To do so, we sampled 100 freshwater lakes (natural and artificial), inserted in 14 watersheds of Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil. The lakes were distributed along an arid gradient from the coast (humid) towards the continent (semi-arid) and sampled during the dry season (from September to October). Research conducted with phytoplankton community of lentic environments can add relevant information about the importance of local and regional mechanisms in determining the diversity at different spatial scales. This can be due to factors that allow the isolation and quickly understanding of their individual and interactive role. Despite its importance, little is known about the ecological mechanisms that regulate their distribution patterns. In addition, work on the relative importance of local control vs. regional influence, beta and functional diversity, and delimitation of surrogates’ species in phytoplankton communities are scarce, especially when investigated along environmental gradients as rainfall regime. A better understanding of these factors allows the formulation of relevant hypotheses for understanding the richness patterns and the development of efficient methods of monitoring and conservation practices.
