SUMMARY:

The high cost and environmental impact of traditional elements of civil construction, such as rubble and concrete, gives rise to the use of materials with greater economic, sustainable and easy handling advantages, such as geosynthetics that have been applied on a large scale in recent years. However, concerns about durability arise as the polymeric origin is subject to different degradation agents, e.g. ultraviolet radiation, oxidation and weathering. It is common for ultraviolet radiation data to be established from readings at meteorological stations located at a given distance from the geosynthetic exposure points. Thus, this article aims to propose a calibration of ultraviolet radiation on the coast of the city of Natal/RN, based on data obtained from the Meteorological Station of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). UV radiation measurements were performed on four different days at the Department of Oceanography and Limnology (DOL/UFRN), which were compared with the database of the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET). The UV radiation was measured in three positions (0°, 6° and 45° with the horizontal), in order to contemplate the slopes prescribed in different test standards for the exposure of geosynthetics to UV radiation. Additionally, a critical analysis was performed on the data presented in previous research, with exposure in the same study area. The results elucidated the need for in situ verification of ultraviolet radiation in this type of degradation assessment.
