SUMMARY:

The eastern coast of the Brazilian state called Rio Grande do Norte (RN) is marked by the domain of active cliffs and sandy beaches, often associated with fields of mobile dunes and fixed by vegetation, intercepted by rivers outfalls and estuaries. Along this gological-geomorphological context of natural fragility of the seashore, the Municipality of Tibau do Sul is inserted, specifically the stretch of Praia Beach, where socioeconomic activities are strongly based on international tourism, with repercussions on national and regional tourism, encouraged by the opportunities of business and investments in the real estate sector, in addition to the construction of second homes. Such factors indicate the importance of tourism and real estate activity for the municipality and, consequently, with relevant public and private financing and investments on a range of seafront subjected to intense natural and anthropogenic coastal dynamics, in which disasters have occurred due to use and occupation of land carried out inadequately and based on ineffective public policies. In view of this, this study presents a methodology based on the use of a spatial databases in Geographic Information System and reports of historical rainfall data, for the determination of vulnerability rates with the use of geotechnologies in the region of Pipa Beach/RN. The indexes were calculated through weighted statistical analysis of thematic classes of geology, geomorphology, land use and occupation, slope, vegetation and extreme precipitation events. The vulnerability map is essential to strengthen the understanding of disasters in coastal areas and provide subsidies for the planning and control of the use and occupation of coastal environmental space, information that helps in decision-making regarding interventions to reduce the degree of risk and in the elaboration of a contingency plan, as well as for licensing and inspection of coastal regions.
