The development and improvement of materials are fundamental factors for the social, environmental and economic improvement of countries. In this context, biochemical additives for cement-based materials have been extensively explored for their innovative and sustainable character, since they are extracted from renewable and biodegradable sources, such as biopolymers. According to the property to be optimized, some biopolymers have been studied as partial and total additives / substitutes for components of cement pastes. The objective of this work was to identify and analyze primary studies that address the use of biopolymers in cement pastes as a final or intermediate product. The method used was a systematic review of the literature in articles published in the following databases: Web of Science, Scopus, CAPES Periodicals and Science Direct between 2010 and 2020 with the aid of the Start and Excel tools. The results showed a growth trend of this theme from the year 2015, with the main viscosity being studied. The convergence in terms of the use of consolidated biopolymers in the world market, such as bacteria, chitosan and lignin, which are widely commercialized materials, stands out. Despite the environmental gain regarding the insertion of natural organic materials in the pastes, 57.14% of the researchers did not mention this differential in the studies developed.
