SUMMARY:

The present study investigates the processo of social formation of Ribeira do Seridó throghout the 18th and mid-19th centuries. This interpretative analysis of Ribeira do Seridó was based on the concepts of space conceived by the French philosopher Henry Lefebvre and the concepts of place, place and absence of place by the English geographer Edward Relph. The dialogue constructed in this text between the studies of Lefebvre and Relph, in line with a phenomenological interpretation of the actions of beings in their daily experiences, from a Heideggerian perspective, offered the necessary theoretical support for the analysis of the spatial formation of Ribeira do Seridó to over time. In dialogue with this, this study examines the social composition of Ribeira do   Seridó, not referring to the quality/color of the individuals who built the conceived space of Ribeira do Seridó and attributed senses of place to that same space. In this text, there was a concern to understand historically how descendants of mestizos, such as brown people, for example, were defined as white and the meanings of being White in the   colonial   and   imperial Society of Ribeira do Seridó understanding   the   specificities   of   the   White   social   category in a reality marked by the processes of colonization and miscegenation. Thus, the concepto of quality/color and condition were also relevant in this study. In documentar terms, this research was based on parish sources (baptism, marriage and death   records), judicial sources (post-mortem inventories and manumission letters) and administrative sources, such as population maps, referring to the space-time sections mentioned and which were examined through a crossing of data and quantitative, serial, qualitative, onomastic and indicative methodologies. Finally, this research makes it possible to fill in historiographical gaps about the senses of place constituted in the colonial and imperial Society of Ribeira do Seridó, as well as about the historical understanding of the White category, showing that White is a historical, relational and situational social construction, being the White of the sertões of Seridó a White-not-white person in the strict sense, but Rather a White-mestizo.
