ABSTRACT

This thesis focuses on studying the memory of migrant families from villages and slums in the city of Teresina, Piauí, during the 1980s and 1990s. The research is based on the monitoring and analysis of social trajectories in the city's expansion process and the multiple ways in which the city manifests itself through social agents. It also examines the emerging relationship with the need for management that characterizes the urban space. The city is discussed as a space that both produces and reproduces social relations, expressing complex sociability in the population agglomeration, thereby recording social contrasts and existing conflicts in urban areas. The historical process of Teresina's formation allows us to analyze the urban transformations in the city, which, in a way, characterize the construction of the problems faced by migrants (ARAÚJO, 2010) who arrived in Teresina and often adopted the daily practices of urban poor (LIMA, A. J. 2003). This led to a struggle and conflicts in the city for the right to housing, with the occupation of vacant spaces, particularly in the late 1980s and early 1990s, resulting in the formation of Villages and Favelas (LIMA, A. J. 2007).The thesis also explores the history of Piauí, revealing details of the capital's transfer and the imaginary progress that fueled urban growth with migratory flows. As a consequence, there was a reorganization of the city's space in the second half of the 20th century. The study describes the concepts related to migratory processes and the formation of teresinense society, with a strong connection to migration patterns. It also discusses the idea of "Migration of Power," which is linked to the influence of Piauí families in political and economic decisions. With the construction of the new capital, the power dynamics were reorganized. Thus, the establishment of Teresina in 1852 has reshaped the foundations of political and economic influences in Piauí, resulting in a rearrangement of political power. The analysis also examines the migratory flow as a determining factor for Teresina's demographic growth and its influence on the Teresinense society. In the examination of Teresina's historical construction process and migratory processes, which laid the social foundations of the city, the study considered the meanings produced as a way of redefining the relationships built in the capital concerning the right to housing. These meanings were identified through historical documents and newspapers from that period to understand the relationship between migrant communities and the urban expansion process of Teresina.
